Grand Hotel
This shot shows the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. The hotel was built by a combination of railroad and steamship companies as a summer resort. The hotel was opened in 1887 and operates only during the summer. The hotel has the worlds longest front porch. Mackinac Island itself sits in the Straits of Mackinac between the Lower and Upper Peninsulas of Michigan. It is a popular summer vacation spot and is known for its unique character. One of the most unique features is the absence of automobiles. The island uses horses and horse drawn vehicles for almost all transportation.
